Attorney Sandra Diamond was recently asked by The Penny Hoarder, a personal finance website, to review a will created by an online legal services company. You can read the article and her interview here: “I Used a $28 Groupon to Create a Will. Here’s What an Attorney Had to Say.”
Several online legal services companies have tried to build a platform to allow for a do-it-yourself, online estate plan. But do these online platforms ask the right questions? If they don’t, the mistakes can be costly. Many of the reported cases from our probate courts are now cases where the decedent opted to create an “online” estate plan. The documents often are not specific enough, or fail to address key issues, and the family ends up in litigation. These issues can be avoided by working with an estate planning attorney.
